Car Insurance For Electric Cars Is Cheaper, Unless It’s A Tesla

According to a recent study by Assurland, insuring your electric car will cost you less than with a thermal car. However, this trend will reverse if you own a Tesla.

Since the beginning of the year we have seen that the prices for electric cars have risen sharply. It seems that car insurance rates have also increased, but in a much more sensible way. According to an annual study by peer company Assurland, between January 1 and October 1, 2022, the increase was 3% of 50,000 offers submitted during this period. It therefore represents average cost of 630 euros compared to 611 euros in 2021.

Luckily, electric car owners who see the prices of their vehicles rising obviously benefit from the most attractive car insurance prices. Assurland announces an average of 562 euros for an electric car compared to 647 euros for a thermal car.

Insuring your electric car is cheaper

To explain this price difference, Assurland states that insurers often offer additional commercial offers with electric cars, but also mentions the elimination of the TSCA (special tax on insurance contracts for new electric cars purchased between 2021 and 2023.

However, not all electric cars can boast of cheap insurance. Indeed, high-end vehicles like the Tesla benefit from lower prices. On average, it costs 915 euros to insure Elon Musk’s carsalmost as much as a BMW (933 euros) and significantly more than a Mercedes (715 euros).

However, Tesla drivers should benefit from better prices in the coming years. Assurland points this out The average cost of insuring your Tesla has dropped by 11% in two years. Of course, among the most expensive cars to insure we find the Maseratti (1117 euros), but also the Porsche (1055 euros).

To counteract these high prices, Tesla recently launched its own car insurance. This has the particularity of spying on drivers and punishing bad ones, but This offer is not yet available in France.
